![]() ![]() Wall-paper paste inks will wash out of your screen with plain water. Using shellac to adhere the stencils to the screen works even with islands. Use duct tape around the outer edges, as usual. Adhere the stencil to the screen by using a very small brush to apply shellac through the screen onto the stencil and let it dry. Coat the paper with shellac and let it dry. Or, print your design onto standard bond paper. Use duct tape to adhere the stencil to the bottom of the screen. It is non-toxic … check the MSDS for the brand you use.Ĭut stencils from acetate, mylar, or similar thin, plastic film. Wall-paper paste is as archival as anything you can get. Then mix the paste in with your wall paper paste. Or you can use powdered pigments … wear a mask!!!!!! … make a paste by mixing the powder with rubbing alcohol from the drug store or grain alcohol. You can get the idispersions from Guerra in New York … check their on-line site. Make your own inks by using wall-paper paste and pigment dispersions. Do not use oil-based inks while pregnant. Stay away from photo-emulsions while pregnant. Lol – can you tell that it drove me slightly crazy, sorry. It is very sensible to make enquiries about the products and then trust your own judgment. I do completely understand about saying ‘ why take the risk’ but do also feel that we can exercise some personal judgment- otherwise you’ll end up stuck at home doing nothing as when pregnant you’ll quickly find that no-one is prepared to give the safe-ok to almost anything at all. I did make sure that the aquatinting box wasn’t being used the days I was in though even though they had separate ventilation for it I still felt ultra-cautious about it. I say this because when we were painting the panelling in our then new-bathroom with an oil-based egg-shell we had to stop and get water based as it made me very ill indeed.Īs for screenprinting – well I don’t do it, but when I was pg there were others in the group studio who did – I used the premises at the same time as it was a beautifully airy well-ventilated space. I carried on printmaking whilst pregnant and although I have now switched to non-toxic inks and clean up (I used veg oil before so that was fine anyway) I carried on using oil inks etc without blinking to be honest.
